The Nantucket Atheneum recently hosted an eye opening presentation by Jay Famiglietti at the Great Harbor Yacht Club which our staff attended. Jay Famiglietti is a hydrologist, a professor at the University of California, Irvine, and the Senior Water Scientist at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory at the California Institute of Technology. He is also a member of the California State Water Board and founding director of the UC Center for Hydrologic Modeling at UC Irvine. Prior to joining UCI, Famiglietti taught at the University of Texas at Austin and helped launch a climate program and the UT Environmental Science Institute .
Famiglietti and his team have been researching water and climate change for over 25 years. He has appeared the documentary Last Call at the Oasis and in CBS News 60 Minutes. He is a regular contributor to National Geographic Water Currents and to Huffington Post. He is currently working on his first book on the disappearance of groundwater resources the world over.
Groundwater depletion the world over poses a far greater threat to global water security than is currently acknowledged… Full appreciation of the importance of groundwater to the global water supply and security is essential for managing this global crisis, and for vastly improving management of all water resources for the generations to come.
