Educating the Public
One of the NLC’s roles is to educate Nantucket’s residents and visitors about environmental issues that affect us all. Community decisions about protecting the environment should be based on knowledge, and the Land Council undertakes scientific investigations and hires professional experts to provide relevant environmental data to the public.
Recent programs include:
- Educational courses on organic landscaping for professionals and homeowners
- Field trips open to the public on invasive species, water quality, native habitat and eco-systems
- Research field trips to monitor species such as horseshoe crabs, monarch butterflies and moths
- Habitat restoration such as planting dune grass, or removal of invasive species like Japanese knotweed or garlic mustard
